How to make your kitchen gluten free part 2

 The Refrigerator/Freezer

We turned off the refrigerator/freezer, removed all the food, read ingredients, and separate them in two groups.

Gluten-free foods went into one group; foods with gluten, into a second. We paid special attention to foods that did not naturally contain gluten but could have been cross-contaminated (example: butter, jam or peanut butter that had possibly been exposed to a knife that had touched bread).

Everything with gluten was carefully packaged and sent to a local charity, in our case in Vienna, Caritas. We were able to do this even with the refrigerated food, since a Caritas location is at the corner of our street.

We removed all the shelves and washed down the entire refrigerator/freezer inside and out. We washed all jars and plastic containers, replaced them on the refrigerator/freezer shelves, then turned on the refrigerator/freezer.

We made a list of all the foods with gluten that needed to be replaced and shopped for gluten-free versions (examples: soy sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup, frozen baked goods).
